In partnership with the Ministry of Health and SNV, the Government of Burundi is putting in place frameworks to evaluate, reward and rate facilities and environments that meet desired hygiene standards.
This is essentially a competition or championship between different Markets, Dairy Cooperatives and Households/collines within a commune. To win they need to get ‘cleaner, more hygienic and attractive to customers’.
A team will inspect both quarterly and annually the hygiene standards and reward through recognition and certification of those meeting desired standards. Ratings of up to 5-Star will be earned depending on different standards of hygiene met.
Benefits
It’s in the interest of businesses running Markets and Dairy cooperatives to maintain good hygiene standards as this leads to profitability. If the business hygiene standards are found to be low, the facility can be shut down by the Government in case of a disease outbreak or fined.
On the other hand, customers prefer buying in clean and neat environments with higher hygiene standards. Increased traffic to these businesses lead to better revenues and recognition.
Better hygiene standards in Communes translates into better health – protection and growth for their families, especially the children.
It is for these reasons that the 5-Star certification standards aims to improve the hygiene standards across Burundi.
